During the Meet The Crawlers session at SES, someone asked why all of their pages weren't indexed. Google's answer: Every search engine crawls in a different way. Mentions vs indexed. There are instances where we know about the url, but we did not crawl it. Your site may not have enough PageRank for us to do a deep crawl.

This isn't any earth-shattering news, but it does underscore one of the reasons why PageRank still matters.

My question is does PR really matter or is it just the quantity (or quality?) of links pointing to your site?

A new site getting one link from a small site that only has one link itself doesn’t strike me as very important, especially as defined by the SEs.

That same site with 10,000 links looks relevant and important.

Or maybe if it does have just one link but that link happens to be from an authority site like microsoft.com…

I wonder if PR itself is at all relevant or if it has just become a blanket term to reffer to raw aggregate link power.

I guess it depends upon how much faith you put into the actual words that come out of a Google employee’s mouth. 🙂
