A new feature from Marketleap is the Link Trend History Report. First, you need to run their Link Popularity Check tool on the url of your choice. Then, once the report is generated, click on the link titled "Click here for your trend/history report."
What is this report? According to Marketleap, Marketleap's Trend/History report gives you a view of how your website's link popularity has performed over time. If you've run your link popularity reports here in the past, sample data from every day you have run a report is already available. This report only includes data from URL's that have been checked by Marketleap's free tool. It does not represent the complete link popularity history of this URL.
Why is it useful? With the search engines getting more advanced, Google in particular, they are looking at trends more and more. If your site's backlinks spike suddenly, Google is going to look more closely at the site to check for unnatural behavior. If it thinks your site is not following a natural progression, it may decide to bump your site down in the rankings. Looking at the graph produced by this report can show you what the natural progression has been for your site over time, which gives you good information as to how to proceed in the future.
This is also a great way to do some competitive analysis. If you check your competitor's backlinks on a routine basis, you can then see the trend history for them as well. This could lead to some valuable information to see what Google believes is the norm for your industry. If you keep within the norm, you stand a much better chance of not raising any red flags.
Check out the tool at www.marketleap.com. Remember, this is only useful if you've been using Marketleap's Link Popularity Check tool for a period of time. If you haven't yet, start now. It could lead to some interesting information in the future.
