While at the WMW conference, I came across a vendor promoting a different kind of choice for getting revenue on a site, that is similar to adsense, but actually pretty different. It is by Chitika, which also offers the standard adsense-type contextual advertising model, but they now have a new product that is interesting. They call it eMiniMalls. It is like a banner ad, but instead of displaying an ad for a company, it instead displays contextually targetted products in a comparative shopping format. In other words, if your page is about music, it might display several listings for Ipods with the prices at each store (such as Circuit City, etc.), as well as product descriptions, reviews, etc., all within a tabbed banner. Mousing over each tab shows different information about the product. With so much information presented, users may click on the ad - and that earns you money. I am testing it out on one of my sites now, and I will let you know if it ends up being a nice income stream. It's always nice to have options, and this one is one of the more interesting ones I've come across lately. If you want to see if it would be useful for your site, check it out at www.chitika.com/mm_overview.php.
