If you have a business with offices in different towns, or if you are a service provider who services a geographic range, you want to optimize your website for each specific location.

To Begin:

  1. Create a page for each area where you are located or your service area. Put the town in the URL and on the header of the page. Create content which includes the business address, local phone number, business hours, staff, services provided, photos of the area; anything specific about the location. This content should be unique to the other location pages. If your staff is active in the community add that information here to further customize the page.
  2. In the footer of the website link to each location page.
  3. Make sure you add a custom meta description and title tag for each location page which includes the geographic location.
  4. Consider creating a menu on your navigation bar for Locations.
  5. In your blog posts or service pages link to the town pages when appropriate.

Next Steps:

  1. Claim each business location with Google Local Listings (this is not going to work if you service the area, only if you have a physical location there).
  2. Review your meta tags and descriptions on existing pages, do they mention several locations or service areas or just one? Consider revising if needed.
  3. Consider a rating or review program for the different locations and feature those reviews on the location pages. Get5Stars is a simple plugin for WordPress and if you are able to filter your clients by the location they most frequently visit this will be easy for you to implement.
  4. Consider creating videos for each location that you service. With minimal investment and creativity you can create a professional looking video that features your different locations. In the description area of the video be sure to include the physical address of your location with a link back to that location page.
  5. Should you set up social media accounts for your different locations. If your businesses are 10 miles apart, this may not matter, but if you have a location in Houston and another in Dallas, Twitter feeds or Facebook pages for the different locations could be very valuable.
  6. Inbound links or backlinks seem to be a subject of debate lately, but if you have an opportunity to have a link to your location page from a local chamber of commerce, school, or business, I would take advantage of the opportunity.
  7. Are there other platforms where you can list your business: Directories, presentations on SlideShare, podcasts focused on your town, ebooks, etc.
  8. Add your locally taken photos submission sites with credits back to your location.

Always Remember:

  1. SEO is not an overnight success.
  2. Anything questionable you do will come back to haunt you.
  3. Sites with regularly updated quality content come out on top.
  4. Create a site that you would want to visit. Navigation is often underrated - make it easy for a person to find your locations / hours of operations and the search engines will reward you.

The steps aren't complicated, they just require some effort and in some cases creative thinking.
